A Collection of Plants Inspired by the Fruit of the Spirit — Patience, Kindness, Goodness

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

Galatians 5:22-23

The Fruit of the Spirit are found in the Apostle Paul’s letter to the early church in Galatia. These nine virtues describe what the manifestation of the Holy Spirit’s work looks like in a Christian’s life.

This article is the second in a three-part series exploring the Fruit, as well as corresponding plants that serve as unique, beautiful, everyday reminders of God's truth spoken to us in this verse.

Patience

You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.

Hebrew 10:36

Patience is a virtue hard to find in this fast-paced world. God’s long-suffering patience with us sinners is evident every day he chooses to withhold punishment from us who deserve it.

Taking care of any plant requires patience, but even more so the Bonsai plant which calls for meticulous pruning and slow, consistent care. Just like a gardener who carefully prunes his plants, God our Heavenly Father takes care of and has a special plan for each and every one of us.

Kindness

Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

Ephesians 4:32

There is so much more to kindness than just ‘being nice’. Kindness encompasses love, compassion, empathy, forgiveness, and more. Jesus modelled kindness during his time on earth — helping the needy, healing the sick and feeding the hungry.

The Bleeding Heart Vine is named after the appearance of its flowers. Its white heart-shaped petals surround a red centre which resembles Jesus’ love poured out for us when He died on the cross for our sins — perhaps the greatest act of kindness of all.

Goodness

In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

Matthew 5:16

Although goodness encompasses living an upright life and doing good for others, we should do so for the sake of reflecting God’s goodness, for He is the source of all things good. Let us demonstrate God’s goodness to others in everything we do.

When we look at the Heaven Lotus plant, let us be reminded of our God in heaven, from whom all good things and blessings flow.
