Dischidia vidalii Artwork Inspired by Psalm 139 | May 2026
When I think of the month of May, I am brought back to my childhood. It was the time of year when the lilies in my mother’s garden would begin to bloom. I remember her making that observation around the time my younger brother was born. There is something about May that feels full of life and growth.
For families with school going children, May can also be a stressful month. Many are preparing for or sitting their mid year examinations, looking forward to the June holidays that follow. It feels like climbing up a steep mountain and then enjoying the slide down. There is effort, anticipation, and then rest.
The plant I chose for May is the Kangaroo Pocket plant, also known as the Ant Plant, Dischidia vidalii. I have often seen it at nurseries and have always been intrigued by its uniqueness. It is a creeping plant with tiny red flowers, but what stands out most are its balloon like pockets. These modified leaves form hollow, purse shaped pouches filled with roots.

When I first studied it closely, the pocket reminded me of a womb. The vines trailing and intertwining gave me a sense of connection and care. It immediately brought to mind one of my favourite passages from Psalm 139.
“For you created my inmost being
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made.”
Psalm 139:13–14
This verse speaks of a God who is intimate and personal. A God who forms us intentionally and lovingly. We are not accidents. We are carefully made and fully known by our Maker.

There are seasons when I feel defeated and insignificant, as though the things I do do not matter. No matter how hard I try or work, it can feel fruitless and thankless. In those moments, I am reminded that my worth is not found in achievements or recognition. It is found in being His child.
I am grateful for a God who sees what others cannot see. Who knows me fully, loves me deeply, and accepts me not because of what I accomplish, but because I belong to Him. That truth humbles me.
As May is also the month we celebrate Mother’s Day, this artwork is a tribute to mothers. Biological, spiritual, and the many women God uses to nurture the next generation. The Kangaroo Pocket plant reminds me of the nurturing heart that God has placed in mothers, and ultimately of the greater love of our Creator who formed us with care.
The next time you see a Kangaroo Pocket plant, may it remind you that you are fearfully and wonderfully made. You are fully known by your Maker, and deeply loved.
