Sandpaper Vine and Bible Verse Reflection for November: God Is Our Refiner

Starting Well, Finishing Hard

November has a particular kind of weight to it.

The year is almost over, and yet somehow the to-do list has never felt longer. There are things to wrap up, responsibilities to carry, people to show up for — and underneath all of it, a quiet tiredness that creeps in when no one is looking. Maybe you are feeling the pressure of unfinished goals. Maybe this season has brought something heavier than you expected. Maybe you are simply worn out from a year that asked a lot of you.

I painted this artwork thinking about exactly that — the tension between the busyness of year-end and the deep-down longing to finish well.

The Sandpaper Vine — Beauty That Refines

I spotted a cascade of the most beautiful purple flowers as I picked up my son from preschool.

When I looked it up, I discovered it was called the Sandpaper Vine (Petrea volubilis). The name comes from its leaves. If you ever get the chance to touch one, you will realise that the surface is rough, textured, almost abrasive. Nothing like the delicate beauty of the flowers it produces.

Here was a plant that was visually stunning, and yet its defining characteristic was its roughness. It did not become beautiful despite its texture. The two simply existed together.

This reminded me about God.

God Is Our Refiner — James 1:2–4

"Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything."
James 1:2–4

This letter was written by James, the brother of Jesus, to early believers who were scattered and displaced. People who were living through genuine hardship, not hypothetical difficulty. His words were not written from comfort. They were written to people in the middle of hard seasons, much like the ones many of us find ourselves in today.

What strikes me every time I return to this verse is the word produces. Not "survives" or "endures." Produces. As if the trial is not just something to get through, but something that is actively making something in us. Perseverance. Maturity. Completeness.

God is not the author of our pain. But He is a Refiner, one who does not waste it.

What the Rough Leaves Teach Us

Maybe you are in a season that feels sandpaper-rough right now. The kind that does not feel beautiful from where you are standing.

Perhaps it is a relationship that is stretching you. A responsibility that is heavier than you expected. A year that did not go the way you planned. Or simply the accumulated weight of doing life faithfully, day after day, without much fanfare.

The Sandpaper Vine does not become less rough to bloom. It blooms as it is, textured leaves and all.

I think God works in us the same way. He does not wait until we are polished and easy before He produces something beautiful through us. The roughness and the blooming happen together. That is what refining looks like.

We do not have to enjoy the hard seasons to trust that something is being formed in us through them.

A Moment to Carry With You

The next time you see a Sandpaper Vine, or any plant whose beauty surprises you, pause and remember:

  • God does not waste the rough seasons.
  • Perseverance is not just survival. It is growth.
  • You are being made more complete, not less.

I Would Love to Hear From You

As we move toward the end of the year, I wonder, what has this season been refining in you?
